Yesterday was a great day for me, went to the stroke clinic, met with neurologist, had an echo Cardiogram and the diagnosis is excellent. I do have a few side effects from the meds, they dilate the blood vessels in my eyes and give me a blurred periphial vision, am assured that will disappear over time as my body gets used to the meds. The one thing they stressed at the clinic is that..STROKES ARE PREVENTABLE, NO ONE NEEDS TO HAVE A STROKE....if you don't know what your blood pressure is as you read my post, you could be in trouble..my friends get your blood pressure checked.. the nurse at work, the drugstore, the walk in clinic, book a physical, get an appointment with your doctor . If you have high cholesterol it can be managed quickly with drugs.....look at your life and your world and try to imagine what it would be like if you couldn't speak,or walk, or use your hand...I got the hell scared out of me and I realize how lucky I was..whatever the doctor says is what I am going to do, I got a second chance at life! I will advocate this forever, you may even get sick of hearing it and if you do just e-mail me and tell me what your blood presure is, tell your spouse, your friends at work, your neighbours, your in laws, anyone you can because STROKES ARE AVOIDABLE..take care tractor neighbours..Mike in Exeter Ontario

Hi Mike, Great news that you are getting all those test completed and with good results. Sure makes a person feel nice when the test are completed and the Doctor's tell you your health is improving. I have to do another stress test for my heart next friday/26, so I am out walking for an hour in the morning and again in the evening, taking in a few hills along the trip, hopefully will pass the test. I had often wondered about a stroke or heart attack, because I was one of those persons who did not get their blood work checked, I would get the doctor to check my BP a couple of times a year, sure will be keeping a close check in the future. Cheers, Murray

As a 25 year-old who had a mild stroke when he was 24 I will add to your message by saying, "Older people are not the only ones who need to check up on these things!!!!" My cholesterol was a little high. My BP has always been in the normal range, but the stress probably had it up higher the day I had mine.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE:

Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps.

Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK, to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE. (Coherently) (i.e. . . . It is sunny out today)

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue . if the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

If he or she has trouble with any one of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

Education can be life saving!

My father died as the result of a stroke and you are absolutely right. I'm living my life hoping to steer clear of one myself. I'm glad you are doing well and keep us posted.

Tim

Glad to hear your good news! Good health is something we take for granted until we don't have it.

Checkups are necessary, folks; get 'em!

MS: This is my first time responding to your stroke updates. I too am very glad to hear the good news. I agree with following the Dr.'s advice closely. However, they are sometimes conservative in their advice as most people will not make lifestyle changes which require effort/discipline. Good to hear you're taking this thing seriously. I appreciate your humor, positive attitude, and spiritual insights. Glenn F.

Hi Lou, nice to hear from you. In regards to Exeter it is inland from Lake Huron on the east side about 14 miles inland, the largest port near us is Goderich about twenty miles north. We are north of London about 30 miles, Toronto is about 120 miles east, we are considered South west Ontario. I have been through Syracuse a few times. My daughter went to university in Montreal and we used to come home state side to Buffalo then scoot home through Fort Erie to Brantford-London and home. I was always impressed with your toll roads in New York they were so well maintained , grass cut, looked wonderful. Take care Lou and thanks for your post..Mike in Exeter Ontario

After having a heart attack and three heart surgeries between 2003 & 2004, I agree completely. Most all of those problems are preventable. I am 100% now and watch the meds, the BP, the foods, the Dr visits, etc. etc. Just the simple act of taking your blood pressure can tell so many signs of trouble looming ahead.

I am so glad to hear the good news from you and surely do hope that everyone will pay attention to the message you are delivering. BTW - my blood pressure tends to run between 80 and 90 over 50 to 60. When I get really tired it runs lower than that, I have had a nurse tell me that I have to blood pressure of a dead person, I didn't think that was too funny at the time, however this 'splains why I tend to stay cold most of the time (hands, feet and bottom esp.).
Take care of yourself and please follow Doc's orders....you add so much to this bunch of folks and we surely would miss you if you weren't here. Take care and have a good'un. CL
