My barn is pretty narrow, I only have about an inch to spare on each side of the door and the posts on the inside of the old barn. Should I cut the axles off my 300 Farmall? Or would it be better to cut notches in the side of the barn and the posts holding it up??

No answers required, just wanted to have some fun this morning!!!!

Maybe you need a government research grant to find and assess the best solution for the problem.

Here's my solution. Install a big retractable roof on your barn. Then buy a Sikorski helicopter to airlift your tractor into the barn. You'll never have to worry about the width of the barn door again.

Get a large hoist and set the barn over the tractor.

Simple. Build a bigger barn.

Let your wife drive it in the barn, sounds like she's been making a couple inches into a foot for a long time.

Don't really see the point of keeping this one going. No sense kicking the guy any more.

Here in the UK Nuffield made a tractor with the same rear axles as a Farmall M. A farmer local to us in the 1960s had one of these tractors, he also had a young son who was allways getting into trouble on the farm. One day the young lad asked his dad if there was anything he coud do to help. His dad gave him a hacksaw and told him to go and cut off the axles on the Nuffield tractor. Three hours later the lad comes back to his dad with two axle stubs and asks what can he do next. MJ

Go ahead and cut them off, it seems to be the current trend. I've got a shed that I would like to park one of my Hs in, but the shed is not tall enough. The H will fit if I cut off the muffler and the steering wheel though. Think I should do this?

Rusty, Your situation sounds much like a certain "Eastern European" neighbor here in Michigan who had a donkey that kept rubbing his ears (they were about 2 inches too long) on the door header going into the barn. The owner had a heck of a time getting the donkey to enter the barn, so he took a chain saw and cut a notch in the door header so that the donkey"s ears would clear, thus making his entry a more pleasant experience both for the owner and the donkey. Right after the owner finished butchering and cobbling up the doorway, his neighbor came over and asked whm what he was doing. The owner explained the situation, to which the neighbor asked, "since the barn has a dirt floor, why didnt you just dig out about 3 inches of dirt at the doorway, and the donkey would have been able to walk right in without you having to cut such a silly looking notch in the doorway header". Well, said Mr, Kowalski, "I did what I did because his legs cleared the doorway fine. It wasn"t his legs but his ears that were the problem".

That's not even funny Paul. When I was a kid a few of the floor joists in out stable were notched. When I got old enough to wonder about it dad explained that was where the work horses were tied. Dad also had an International 684 with the axles cut off so they didn't snag the door. He never intended to change the tractor width so why not cut them off?

Leave both the barn and the axles alone. Sounds like you have room to get it in and out, so no problem, eh?

Pull the tractor in forward and leave the back end out in the rain...

I agree with leaving your rear end out in the rain. I know mine needs a good cleaning at least once a day. You can fix one of those wind up awenings over the door and just wind in down to keep the sun off it.
