SMTA battery drain

My SMTA has been converted over to 12 volts with a Delco S10 alternator, standard 3 wire. I wired the system according to Bob M"s diagram and it works well, but I get a small amount of battery drain over time. The drain seems to be through the Battery wire to the alternator. I think the drain is very slight but over time will drain my battery so the tractor won"t start. What is the best solution? Would you recommend a battery disconnect switch or a switch in the power wire to the amp meter that supplies over all power?

There is a diode kit you can buy for about 15 dollars that plugs in to the delso alternator and wires in line with your existing wiring. I had to put one on my 44 massey. It had the same challenge. Now I put them on all my old tracotr conversions. Call John Martin 608 574 9091

Assuming there’s no other parasitic load when the tractor is shut down, problems gotta be with the alternator – either a failing internal regulator or a bad diode. Bob’s test below will tell you which it is.

However probably the easiest fix is to simply replace the alternator. Rebuilt 10SI ‘s are dirt cheap and available everywhere!

First, try this. Upon shutdown, pull out the 2-wire plug to the regulator, and see if the battery still drains. If so, also disconnect the charging wire from the large output stud, and cerify that the battery DOES NOT go dead. If the battery holds it's charge, you definitely have an alternator problem.

"cerify" should be VERIFY!

I would guess that your alternator has a bad diode in it. A good diode will block the current from flowing from the battery to the alternator when the engine if off. If the diode is leaking, then the current will flow, thus draining your battery.
