Super C Hydraulic Pump Shaft Wear

How much is acceptable?

The hydraulic pump on my Super C was leaking fluid into the crankcase so I removed it and am replacing the O-rings with those supplied in the Touch Control gasket kit. I have read on this forum that if the shaft is worn too much a speedi-sleeve is the answer but am wondering how much is too much. I measured the shaft dimeter on the smooth part and in the groove and came up with 0.623 for non-worn spot and about 0.620 in the groove. While you can see and feel this the amount of wear doesn't seem too excessive.

I should note also that the O-ring seel looked to be in bad shape as it was brittle and the inside edge was hard and had several grooves in it.

For reference there is a place close by that does carry Speedi-sleeves so if tat is the correct answer it wouldn't be too difficult.

Lacking any other advice I am thinking of just putting it back together and hoping that the new O-ring will fix the leak.

Am I inviting another rebuild by not putting a sleeve on the shaft?

Thanks in advance.
Lance

Thanks all for the comments. I agree that going back in isn't a big deal so I will re-assemble with new O-rings and gaskets and see what happens.

One question though... I was under the impression from discussions on this forum that use of the Speedi-Sleeve would not require enlarging the shaft hole (I think that I read that the sleeves are about 11 mils thick). If it does require enlarging then the decision is even easier to make since I don't have the tools / experience to get that right and the cost to have a machine shop do it might be a little high (especially since I live in a suburb of Washington, DC where you don't drive by a machine shop every day of the week).

A big thanks to everyone on this forum (past and present) as I have learned a lot about these old tractors by searching the archives (I own the M that was on our family farm when I grew up in ND and now have a Super C and a Super A in Virginia).

Machine shop drilled the hole out in mine -- I did not want to try to force it in, even if would go in. The shops charge by the hour. Going rate around here is about $50. I was charged $31.82 in 2003 to enlarge the hole and install the sleeve; the sleeve was around $20 if I remember right.

Hi...I think I would just put in the new o-ring and find out what happens. Like Peabody says, it's really not a big deal to go back into the pump again if you need to. For what it's worth, I had a grove on the shaft for my Super A and just replaced the o-ring years ago and have not had a problem/leak. Like your grove, I could both see it and feel it.

If you use a speedy sleeve, the hole in the housing it goes through has to be enlarged. Unless you are very good at it, let a machine shop do it.

I think I would put a speedi-sleeve on it while you have it apart, then you won't have to do it twice. Hal

Sounds like the o-ring replacement might do the trick. And I think I would go ahead and reinstall and see what happens. That's what I did, without a speedi sleeve and mine has held for over three years. Besides, removing and rebuilding that little pump is really no big deal, even if you have to do it twice.
