My SC Gets an ice build up at the junction of carb manifold. Could this be causing tractor to stall after 20 min use? Any idea's how to fix it? Thanks, Jeff

This is why airplane pilots pull on the "Carburator heat" when throttling back to land. Carb icing can occur on high humidity days when temps are in the 50"s-70"s too. Forget to pull it on, and you may not have climb out power if needed.

there ae several things. The pressure drop in the venturi or elsewhere leads to a corresponding temperature drop in the air stream as dictated by the gas laws and you also have a more significant cooling effect caused by the evaporation of the fuel which creates a cooling effect quite similar to that which governs the refrigeration process. This can cool things down significantly and under the right conditions of temp and humidity you can having icing in several areas of a carburetor. icing can occur in the inlet duct, at the choke plate, venturi or throttle plate. Best fix is some type of carb heat.

This is totally normal. It is caused by the venturi effect which is that when air passes through a space that is smaller in diameter (like the venturi of a carburetor), the air flow speeds up and absorbs heat from the surrounding surface. This removal of heat (or cooling) will condense moisture in the surrounding air on the cooler surface. If the temps are close enough to freezing, ice will form not only outside but also on the inside. This cooling affects the air/fuel mixture causing the engine to run rich until heat from the exhaust manifold overcomes the cooling venturi effect.

Now, is this what is causing your engine to stop after 20 minutes or so? Well, it might as this condition can richen the fuel mixture enough to flood the engine bad enough to cause it to stall. If you are seeing black smoke from the exhaust before it dies, then this is likely the cause. The cure is to run the engine faster or somehow get heat to the area that is freezing up. Sometimes gas line antifreeze (or running ethanol) will absorb enough of the moisture inside the carburetor to cut down on this problem.

There is no real fix for that since its just normal for a carb to ice up like that. Sort of the way a carb works. You most be where its humid. One way to help is to make a shield that way help hold some of the manifold heat in that area but thats about it. As far a causeing it to die I have never had that problem from carb iceing.

My Super Cs are good about this BUT i have a CASE SC that dose it so after it starts to freeze up i Stop the Engine until it totaly defrosts and then the manifold and carb have warmed up and restart it and it runs fine!
