One of my rear hubs and axles needs to be replaced. It has been suggested to leave the "new" hub attached to the "new" axle and replace as a unit. Can the seal be replaced, or does the hub have to be off the axel? Does that make sense, or should the time and effort be spent to remove the hub from the axel for easier installation. What's your guys thought????? ??

The seal rides on the axle. If the axle seal hasn't been leaking the wheel can be nearly impossible to remove. I'm guessing that's why it was suggested that they be replaced as a pair. Regardless, you will need to "lift the lid" off the tranny to get the bull gear removed to pull the axle.

What do you mean by hub? Do you mean the cast-iron wheel center or do you mean the axle housing? When I look at the outside of the axle housing on our W6, it appears that the seal doesn't seal against the axle shaft(like an M), but instead onto the cast wheel center. I would think that the easiest way to replace the seal would be to take off the wheel center and then use a 3 or 4 jaw puller with the arms reversed from the center of the axle shaft to pull out the old seal, then pull the old axle shaft out and put the new axle and seal in. This would allow you to leave the new one together, but the old one would need to come apart. I have never done this before,so I could be completely wrong, but that is my guess. Good luck.
