Just bought a 1943 Farmall "M" The gears rake when I put it in gear. The clutch engages close to the bottom, yet it has very little free play at the top. The adjustment rod is screwed out about as far as it can go. Any ideas on what might be wrong before I have to remove the liftall pump to get a look at the clutch ect.The clutch does not slip and there are no unusual noises except for the gears grinding when I put it in gear. Thanks for your help!!

It could also be a dragging pilot bearing in the flywheel. This is the bearing that the clutch output shaft goes into. There is a grease zerk located on the flywheel and can be aligned to the hole on the starter side of the torque tube which will allow you to try greasing it. If you haven’t greased it for a while, try putting in a couple shots of grease and see if this helps. DO NOT OVERGREASE as the grease will work past the shaft and into the clutch linings causing the clutch to slip.

From likely to least.

The fingers on the PP are not adjusted to the same height causing the engagement to be over a wide range. Adjust fingers to specifications.

The friction disk (driven) is warped and draging on the FW and PP. (replace, No need to split tractor)

Clutch throughout cross shaft has worn pivots or connection to fork.

If, when pulling hard, the clutch starts to slip when pushed in less than 1/2 travel, but won't release far enough to make gear changes, I would think it was the first (above)
good luck, JimN
