Okay, I think I have this strange engine figured out now...go the gas head, figured out which rod and main brgs i need..now, is there any reason NOT to use the stepped dome pistons w/ the gasoline 8043dc head? Will I have to upgrade the starter to 12volt? Or would I be better off just putting back flatheads?

My H started out with flat top pistons and a kerosene head. When I rebuilt the motor, I went with the stepped pistons, gas head, and reground cam. Compression went from about 4.8:1 to 6.5:1. Same starter, same battery. I think that it starts better now, it's like the higher compression makes it pop sooner.

Does your block have a dipstick or a place to bolt on a fuel pump ?

I would get the starter rebuilt like turn the arm if needed and new brushes or you mite be better off getting a rebuilt one for 120 or so then new cables 1ga and new batt that fits the box then you are in great shape for the rebuild. Just remember the weakest link with your new motor will be the starter and the bendix on it. I have access to ones rebuilt from HARVEY BROS in GALESBURG,ILL They have been rebuilding stuff forever. Prices do vary around different areas but they are the best that i know about and never had any problems. But the starter has to have a full deck to play with. Just remember when your new engine is done it will have some breaking in to loosen up. You should use the crank to turn the engine over as you re-assemble parts. If the crank wont turn it over how do you expect the starter to do it.The H started with 6v when new and will still do it if given a chance. Now if you want to spend a bunch of time getting an alt and 12v and changing lite bulbs and so forth go for it. There are guys on this site every day with all kinds of problems changing to 12v. have fun and enjoy keeping an old tractor original and running like new.

There shouldn't be any reason not to go with the stepped head pistons, I have a DC stamped head with stepped head pistons in my H, runs great. The only thing that might go wrong, is getting a head that has been surfaced too many times, which will make the pistons hit the head, but thats only a small chance.
