IH 364 diesel hydraulic question

My IH 364 diesel has the hydraulic reservoir under the seat, keeping the hydro fluid separate from the trans fluid. The fill plug is behind the seat way up top. It currently has a plug with a "vent" in it but as far as I can tell on the parts microfiche for this 364 it should have a regular pipe plug here. It is obvious that some previous owner added this vented plug and welded a dipstick type rod on the bottom of it with a line for the fill level. They only had the reservoir half full. But since the parts microfiche shows a regular pipe plug without a vent should this reservoir be run completely full?

I had a 354 with the same hydraulic setup. It had a pipe plug in it because when I would open it to check the oil, presure would release. Look in the fill hole, it is solid for about 3-4 inches down, fill level is at the bottom of the solid piece, or at the begining of the open reservoir.

I agree. Due to the previous owner having the incorrect mark on a dipstick he had rigged up, I think my 364 has been running low on hydro fluid causing it to get hot. This resulted in weak 3 pt. lift, mushy steering, etc. after the tractor was run a while. As best I can tell, these 364's don't hold much fluid when full so if when I was running it low, it was really working the heck out of what little fluid was in it. I bet this may help keep my fluid cooler and result in better hydraulic performance. Thanks for the reply.
