I am rewiring my W6 with the original 6 volt system and the field resistor on the light switch is broken, crushed. The dealer says they are no longer available. Is there a modern day resistor available and if so what is it that I need?

If you have a cutout with a term. marked FLD, it has a resistor to ground of the same value as used on the light switch. simply place add lead from it to the F term of the generator, and connect it on top of the one going to the light switch. The resiter in the cutout will provide the low charge, and when you put the light swithc on the high charge position or turn the lights on it will ground the lead and give you the high charge.

Going from memory here but I think the OEM field resistor is on the order of 3.0 or 3.2 ohms. The resistor should be rated at 10 watts or more - a resistor rated for fewer watts can overheat, burn out or even start a fire in the ammeter box.

As a practical matter however, unless you are an absolute stickler for originality I strongly recommend you ditch the cutout and field resistor and replace 'em with a voltage regulator.

A regulator does a much better job of maintaining the proper charging current to the battery, and it eliminates the risk of overcharging. For $35 or so it's money well spent!

Bob,
Thanks for your reply. You are the expert and if that is what you suggest, that is what I will do. Thanks

Well I don't consider myself to be an expert. Just sharing something I learned the hard way while messing around with old tractors!
