52 Farmall Super A Final Drive Question

Just got my final drives back from the machine shop where I had them cleaned and glass beaded. They looked great but I noticed some castin differences so I decided to look at the dates on the casting marks. Couldn"t read them before all the crud was removed. One had a W and the other a B. Asside from one having some slightly raised ribs and the other being smooth on the outside they look identical. Would it be better for me to look for a matching final drive or am I being too stuck on it being original? Hopefully the bearings I ordered last week will fit. I"ll take a micrometer to it this weekend. Thanks in advance

Thanks for the responses. As far as what abuses the tractor has experienced it was reported to me that as some point in it"s life it was rolled over. That would be consistent with some of the other damage that I"ve encountered: top of gas tank creased, cut off Air filter stack. Also, that transmission case on the left side has some damaged mounting holes for where this final drive was attached. It would explain the diffent sized studs that I removed as well as buggered up holes. A machinist friend of mine drilled them out and inserted helicoils. I guess all these old tractors would have some interesting stories to tell if they could talk.

B matches 1956, so it's off a 100 or 130. I seriously doubt if they are different from the SA. I think Hugh McKay has or has had both, he should know. I would be more interested in what abuse the tractor went through to make it break. I have found a couple of cracks on the front cover and front axle of my 460U, don't know if they were related -- perhaps it was driven off a cliff -- Machinest welded them properly, damage is now invisible.

Mornin Kevin, Its up to you on the originality issue. The easiest way to check, is like you say, mike up the bearings from both sides. Im pretty sure they should be the same.

When the rear tires are installed, especially if you have the rims dished in you cant hardly see those casting ribs anyway. Those final drives are not cheap either, so once again up to you!
