If adjusting the carb doesn't help, double check the valve lash adjustment. Could be a tight valve.

Ok here we go , First off get the timming set correctly then scyronize the govener to the card the get the engine to ideal at the lowest rpm that it will idea at and if you are good she should darn near run slow enough to count the fan blade and this is done by get the ideal screw set where it is running smoothe thenstart backen down the curb idel and keep playen with it just a fraction at a time on the screw i do this with a tach and have had them still runnig at 340 rpm after ya get it as smooth as you can at the lowest setting then bring the curb idel back up to 450-475 then shut the tractor off turn the main screw in till it just touches the seat then back out 4 full turns then don't screw with it it is the best your going to get and if that ain' good enough then change your gas.

With the engine warm & running at wide open throttle (WOT), turn high speed mixture screw in until the engine begins to starve for fuel. Then turn the screw out until the engine begins to blubber. Now find the "sweet spot" in between the two settings. If you are working the engine (plowing, etc.), then the high speed screw needs to be turned out 1 turn or more beyond the "sweet spot" to be sure the engine isn"t starving for fuel and can develop its rated power.

The same procedure can be followed for idle mixture with the addition of the ldle stop screw to set the low speed RPM.
On the "M" carb, the idle mixture screw is an air adjusting screw so turning in will richen the mixture and out will lean the mixture.
Aren"t carbs fun!!

Richer is out for the load screw, richer is in for idle. Assuming you have a fuel problem you are too lean. It is possible to have both screws out of sync. Adjust the idle speed and mixture until smooth, with the throttle closed. With the engine at operating temperature and WOT, turn the load screw in until the engine runs rough then out until smooth, plus an additional 1/4-1/2 turn. You may have to adjust both more than once. If it is a fuel problem, and this does not correct it, your carb needs cleaning, or perhaps you have a fuel flow problem. The H/M engines warm up very slowly. I wouldn't use the term "pop", what mine does when cold is "stumble".

I'd leave the idle screw alone as long as it idles well. The load is the one you need to adjust. turn it out a little at a time till you find the sweet spot.
