I think the ones that recommended you make your
wins hands down. Home Depot has stranded wire too. You need to identify each wire as to where it was installed before you remove them. Make the wires a little longer. I would use use the spades that you solder on. Take a small sample of wire with you to get the correct gauge. Hal

Making your own replacement wiring harness really isn"t that difficult, particularly if you still have the old one to use as a sample. This is the harness I just made for my 340U, which likely has more wires than your A. Stretch out the old harness side by side with a new piece of loom (Brillman.com), cut it size, poke holes to match the old one, and then thread the wires thru. I used a length of solid copper ground wire as a "fishing tape", pulled each wire thru one-by-one, wrapping the wire and the fish wire end-to-end with electrical tape. Someone on this site also recommended heat shrink tubing for fishing.

I bought #14 and #10 automotive wire from NAPA. Automotive wire is a bit more flexible than building wire of the same gauge, but that would work fine also. The loom was less than $10 and the wire about $25. All you have to do is add crimp on connectors.

Paul: That is the way to go about it, exactly how I did mine. Your also right the Farmall A, SA, 100, 130 and 140 are much simpler, as every wire goes full length of the harness.

Jim: Farmall wiring harnass at least pre 1958, are really quite simple to make up. The original IH operators manual for each tractor has an excellent diagram. Between that and Bob M's diagrams, I was able to put two of these together quite quickly. IH don't give you information on wire size, Bob does and he also gives good instruction if changing to an alternator. In his article, Bob also gives a lot of good advice. Took me longer to round up the materials, than do the actual wiring, and I had to go less than 5 miles for those.

Yeah, Brillman is who I would recommend if you just HAVE to buy one. But they are horribly expensive. Farmall wiring harnesses are really simple and a LOT cheaper to make yourself. Even by buying the stock wire from Brillman. Bob M has the wiring diagrams. If you've got any mechanical/common sense, I would make my own and save several tens (if not almost hundreds) of dollars.

Jim, I don"t know just where in Michigan you are, but Worthington Ag parts in St Johns can hook you up with someone who can make up a harness to original specs.

So, call them, and if they can get it at a bearable price, use plastic, and have them mail it out.
