Does anyone have any tricks or tips to prevent tractor tires from dry rotting and cracking? I store my tractors out of the weather but was wondering if there is anything else I can do to keep them looking brand new.

Some tires stand up to tme without help some don't. Have Dads old SM that has tires that nieghbor pulled off JD 3010 back in seventys because bars were worn down. SM has been kept in open front pole shed all these years and tires are still in good useable condition with no deep cracks.

I"ve read that the two things that kill old tires is sunlight and ozone. Keep it in a shed stops one but the ozone is everywhere. I suppose the coatings mentioned cut down on that though.

Storing them out of the weather is the best step. Not uncommon to see a 20 or 30 year old combine that's been kept out of the weather to have the orignal tires that are in good shape.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you have extended periods of time where you don't use your tractor (winter months for example), blocking it up off the ground helps keep those tires in shape.

Tom, any tire product that contains glycerine will protect rubber. Any good "Tire Shine" product will have glycerine in it and using the same product you would use on your car will give the tire a clean shiny appearance and will preserve the rubber, use on any rubber surface in addition to tires..... ..Mike in Exeter Ontario

Miller tire used to sell a tire paint, maybe still do, that will help protect the rubber. Armoral [sp] would also help.

I read an article once that said that the natural oils in the rubber compound evaporated off if the tire wasn't used . By using the tire regularly it kept moving these oils to the surface of the tire . Now I don't know if this is true or not but it seems to me that unused tires do rot faster . I know the tires on my unused pickup are only 4 years old and are getting cracks in the sidewalls already . They have less than 1000 miles on them . ...Randy
