Looking for an early F-20 and found one with a stuck engine and after market starter complete. The guy wants over $3000 because it has the duck bill front end and starter. I was thinking maybe $800, but $3000 I can't believe it. Am I off base here and need to get with the times? Are prices really that high?

It's up to you but as others have noted that sounds high.

You could make him an offer (if you haven't already) of $800 (or even less) and if he says no, give him your phone number and leave. Leave the ball in his court. He might think it over and in a month or two accept your offer.

There is an F-20 on ebay with a starting bid of $15,000! Seems like one too many zero"s to me. If that gets a bid, I might have to start selling!

I figured that was a tad too high but thought I would check with you guys. Thought I may be out of the loop but hoped I was on target. Heck, I thought I was giving him to much at $800. My wife's father was born in 1934 and thought I would rebuild one in his honor for her sake. Guess I will keep on looking, thanks to all of you that replied. You all have given me great advise over the years and it is much appreciated.

Aparently it must be the first one ever built at that price. Unless the little wife has her heart set on it and will not take no for a answer, that extra $2,500 more than (probably) what it is worth will buy you alot of time to look elsewhere. Dave NE IA

Stuck tractors shouldn't have gone up in price... too many variables, the block might be ruined, along with the crank, head, etc. etc. That guy is waaaayyyy off base with his asking price. If it was in running condition... that's another story.

As far as some restored or mechanically rebuilt, the prices should be up a little because prices are up. I know a decent running H is worth around $750, but to go completely through the engine can cost over $1500 itself. Plus tires, etc. and the final value should be higher. I'm aware I'll never get my money out of my H by selling it, so I'm hoping it will last another 64 years before it needs another overhaul.

Well, The electric starter is fairly rare and the duckbilled front end certainly is. I would say $3000 is high if it is stuck. I have a nearly origional duckbill, runs great and on good rubber. I know I wouldn't let it go for Less than $3000.

Old tractors that are stuck are mostly that, stuck. Maybe worth no more than scrap.

I know little about duckbill F-20's, but yes that's probably at least twice too much, perhaps nearly 4 times as you indicate. Won't do you much good at the present time, but he won't sell it for that much unless he finds a sucker that is not familiar with the tractor. I looked at a $300 H a while back that the guy wanted $1200 for. Some sellers overvalue their stuff because they have no knowledge of the going rate. Others are simply trying to rip you off. Prices have not gone up that much. I literally hate negotiation, whether for a car, truck or tractor. Others will disagree with me, but I like auctions. If two people want to run the price up, that's up to them, I will walk away. I have bought 4 tractors at auction, thought all were within a couple of hundred of what they were worth.

Prices all depend on Who, what, when, and where. I've seen tractors sell for cheap to way to high. Never makes any since any more. Just go to a few auctions and you will see things sell for twice what they would cost new at one and 1/4 what new is at another one. Went to one auction years ago and a lincoln buzz box sold for $3?? and what was funny was that at the time a brand new one with hood sold for $159.95. Guy walked up to me and said man I got a good deal on that didn't I, I told him nope you got took and you did it to your self. Told him what a new one cost and he said man your right should check prices before I buy again I said yep.

I know that prices for modern equipment are up about 40%, give or take. A planter that would have been maybe $8000 a year or two ago is now $11,000 or $12000. Plus it"s another year or two older!
That does sound like a lot for the stuck F-20 though. Some folks figure that they can ask anything they want for stuff.
