Recently, I built power steering for a IH 300 Utility at my facility. Today, I am working on another IH 300 with a bad steering gear box.

This morning I received a phone call from a fellow who has a IH 460 Utility, with loader, with bad steering gear box. He doesn"t want to rebuild the steering gear box and ask me if I could build power steering for his tractor. I know that I can build a steering unit for his tractor, problem is.....the tractor is in Wisconsin and I am in Kansas.

I am wondering if the steering gearbox on the 300 Utility is the same as the 460 Utility? Is there a website for the IH Utility tractor...with specs and pictures?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Best Wishes,
Roland Jackson

Any full scale machine operation could spit out new internals, however,as of yet I guess there are no UTE fans amongst the machining trade....
Imagine the orders they could take....anyone with a UTE wether the box is shot or not would probably want to squirrel away spare parts...there has to be many thousands of 300/330/350UTES out there....at a reasonable price (under $500?),imagine the dollar figure they could take in.With CNC machinery,it would be a point and click operation...they wouldnt have to hire a dozen extra workers to make UTE shafts...The only sticking point could be CASE claiming trademark infringement on selling parts that they (their "old" company they bought)designed 50+ years ago. However,I betcha any court in the land would shoot down a CASE suit...they have the ability to satisfy our needs and they arent...Their loss I say.

No they are wider on the 460's Now i have had luck with welding up the broken teethe and having them recut and they seem to hold Someone needs to start making up new parts for them and of good quality as there is a need of the parts with all that are being rebuilt and put back into service and with all the new techknolage in machine tools it should not be hard to do.

Thanks for the information. I adapt hydrostatic steering to these tractors as the unit bolts up and sets right on top of the steering gear box. So the steering box is only used as a mount. The sector gears are left in place, however. And the front wheels are steered by hydraulic cylinders, so there is no need to rebuild the steering gear box.

I recently purchased an IH 300 to build steering and I like it so well that I am going to keep it. The motor is in great shape as is the hydraulics. But the clutch and the TA need to be rebuilt. I am looking forward to that project! Anyway, I will repaint it, replace the seat...and use it to mow around Camp Jackson. It will be restored for use only. I will post pictures soon.

Thanks again for your help...

Roland.
