On our SH we have the M&W hand trottle. and do not see to get any response beteewn the numbers 1 1/2 to 3. I looked at the likages and found a spot that I think is causing the trouble. Its the likage on the head that goes down to the gov. When I put the tractor at an idle the spring on the "top" of the likage has about a 1/2" gap before it hits the arm to the gov. I was wondering is it OK to put washers in there to take up the slack ? Or will that cause trouble to?
Thanks for the help
Andrew

Jim has it right below. The M&W handle typically has 1" - 2" of handle movement at the "slow" end of handle travel with no effect. I've got 4 M&W- equipped tractors altogether (2 each Super H and Super M) - they all have similar slack on the idle side.

As Jim points out as long as the governor input arm moves full travel stop to stop (ie. from low idle to high idle) the M&W handle is doing it's job. Further, if you remove too much slack by inserting washers over the springs in top link, (called the "governor control equalizer") you risk bowing the long rod connecting the throttle handle with the bellcrank when you go to wide open throttle.

Others will correct me if I am wrong.
There is (usually) an area of throttle lever motion that does nothing at the idle end of the travel. This can be as much as 1/5 or so of the entire sweep. This is more or less the space that assures that when the lever is at idle, that the governor is fully in that position. Shimming that spring will reduce this slack, but it may not change the total wide open setting. The main ingredient is to assure that the governor is being fully opened by the lever for full power operation. (High Idle, and full load speeds)
If the throttle is opening the gov. control lever all the way when pulled back fully, then I'd leave it alone, it needs some slack in the system at that end. Good luck,
JimN
