My old 1466 has been kicking my but for the last couple of days. The front steering/brake pump has been weak and I finally decided to replace it. While I had the MCV off I went through it and I appreciate the help from Allen and the Tractor Vet. The trouble is, after I put it back together it howled like a smashed cat!!!! To make a long story short, I finally discoved the gear that came with the pump had thicker gear teeth. Even though I still had gear lash, the teeth did not match the gear on the PTO. I changed the gear and now it purs like a kitten.

My final question on this matter. Can you wear out hydraulic fluid by continuosly draining it out and pouring it back in?? ;)

Thanks for the help.
Paul

You're very welcome! While I didn't have anything to do with it's final solution, like Al Gore and the internet--I'll be happy to take credit for it.

Hey Allan,
Seeing as you are the forum Hydro expert now, I was just wondering, do the Hydros still have a mechanical type differential in them, or did they have a pump mounted on each of the axle or bullgear shafts with a proportioning valve in between to act like a differential? I was reading a book a while ago and it seems to me the IH engineers wanted to make a fancy hydraulic differential, but I am not sure if they really did it or if it was just a pipe dream, or one of those "What if. . ." ideas.

I'm no expert, that's fer darned sure. :>)

The differential is the same as the gear drive, although it is mounted in the housing "backwards" with the pinion/ring gear relationship flipped side to side.

HARDY HARR HARR,

I'm not sure how my ignorance and misfortune turned into poking fun at Allen, but this is sort of fun. If I hadn't done so many silly things myself, I'd probably join right in.

Thanks again
Paul

I'm just sure Allen puts new fluid in every time.

Doggonit Captain, you were too quick for me on this one. That poor guy out there finally put a quick couple on his hydraulic reservoir so he didn't even have to get a wrench out. What was it, 4 or 5 times on a complete drain? The amazing thing is though, that he found the problem that I am thoroughly convinced would have cost half the farm ifn he had taken it to the shop, just because we're all (especially me) deathly afraid of those Hydros. To answer the question, NO there is no way to were it out by changing it. Might introduce a few contaminates, but no wear out. Harley

Mornin Harley,

Yep that was a fun one.

I could see that $5K repair bill coming at me like a freight train and I just didn't wanna go there if at all possible since I've got a pretty strong background in hydraulics anyway.

Once in the thing, I found out that they are not the big boogie man that everyone thinks; it's just that there is no oil flow diagrams anywhere to be had, so ya have to kinda "figure 'er out" on your own.

Someday, I'd like to get into a large-frame hydro too. They tell me that they are built completely different.

Sounds like Paul ran into the same identical problem that Migraine had. Those darned mis-matched gears with the noise? Must be a production number break in there somewhere?

Allan
