In order to put a maintenance charger on without always having to take the battery box apart I was going to put tails on each battery post. Now am thinking why not just attach to the neg cable at the starter and any ground. Will this work?

Yes this will work, but only if you are talking about a Cub,A,B,BN,C or Super C. On an H or M the cable has to be attached on the battery side of the push button switch.

Not a problem, the big battery cable there at the starter switch leads direct to the hot ungrounded battery post, just make sure to match the ground i.e. If its Positive Grounded the chargers + goes to the iron frame somewhere, but if its Negative grounded, the chargers - ties to the frame. Its actually safer that way (provided you make the connection away from the battery top) as youre not making any sparks above the battery where explosive hydrogen gas can be present from charging.

Yes it will work. I jump or charge my tractors that way all the time. You do have to be careful when connecting at the starter so you don't short out the connections. Go For It.
