Am purchasing 54 SMTA. Current owner bought from estate auction, tractor supposedly recently overhauled. OH job done by mechanic, no way to tell what parts used, or extent of engine work. Short of pulling heads, any way to tell if stepped or domed pistons were used? What is HP rating of 1950 M original, with Super M piston kit (domed), and 54 SMTA ( all gas engines)? Any thing specific I should look for before writing final check? Thanks for the advice. Walter Goggin

Hi Walt, I haven't been getting back any responses that have been posted for me by anyone on here. I happened to look under spam mail and that's where they are. Here's the website for oldoakfarmalls. I left the s off of farmall is why it wouldn't fly. Hal
PS: This should work.

To clarify on my SMMTA purchase, one guy had it overhauled by a mechanic, then the owner died and it was put in an estate sale, and I am getting it from the guy that bought it in the estate sale. No apparent way to locate the mechanic. Hal, the old oak farmalls website is nice, thanks for the reference. Walter

They have an instrument that you can push into the cylinders and see what pistons you have. A borescope light is one them. I borrowed one of these in where I worked you and could see the whole combustion chamber. The plugs were fouling out, even the new ones, so when I looked into those cylinders I never saw so much carbon.
This was on a Ford Mustang and I ended up rebuilding the engine. Check with some of your rental places to see if they have a tool that will let you peek into those cylinders. Hal
PS: Have a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year's.

According to www.oldoaksfarmall.com/ the Farmall M had a drawbar hp of 33.05. The Super M's hp was 41.79 at the DB with the gas engine. The Super M that used LPG had 44.23 on the DB. Hal

Pull a spark plug out and shine a flash light in the hole. You can see the top of the piston to determine what it is. You may have to either turn the engine over or take another plug out to get the piston at the top of the cylinder.

Cheers!

Sid

Unless it was the mechanics estate the tractor was purchased from, I'd go ask him what he put in it. Someone else will surely add the hp figures you seek.
