Throttle Linkage Adjustment on an H

I am a new owner of an 1949 H. After I get done replacing seals in varius places to fix the oil leaks I was going to tackle the throttle.

Right now at the idle postion to about half way on the throttle plate there is no change in speed, there is some play on the linkage where the spring is on the shaft.

How tight should that be? I have pulled the plate off the governor and looks like everything is working.

Tips & advice welcome!

Randy

I am not sure if we did mine right but I will tell you what we did. On the throttle handle the hole was a little worn so we put a brass bushing in ( drilled it out some so a bushing could fit) there to tighten it up and built up the part that goes in the saw tooth with weld. I replaced the spring that holds the handle in place. I replaced the circle saw tooth part with a NOS one. My rod had some wear where the springs are so we built it up with weld and ground it flush. We put a bushing in that crank thing that moves on top of the head ( I forgot what it is called). It was a very tight fit and had to use a clamp to press it on. Next we replaced both springs and that square block thing (nos). I ended up with VERY TIGHT linkage and it seems to work great.

Some of that play might possibly be due to a worn throttle shaft in the carburetor, and also the spring in the governor could be stretched, or the holes where the spring attaches could be egged out. Any one of these by itself wouldn't create much of a problem but if all three are at fault there will be considerable slack in the system.

What I am seeing is the shaft has to move about a half inch before any of the governor linkage moves.

I had ordered a new spring but the original and the holes look ok.
