I bought an H recently that before and after a tune up, carb rebuild, still has no power. It is hard to start without priming the carb, but will idle fine once running. It seems to run about 8-1200 rpm at full throttle, but when you put it into a higher gear it lugs and will not pull. I was wondering if a valve adjustment might be the fix, or if anyone might have had this happen to them. Thanks, JC

It could be that your ignition timing is a bit late or the mechanical advance in the distributor isn't working. Check this with a timing light. If your H is still on a 6-volt system, you will have to hook the power clips to a 12-volt battery. One other thing to double check is the proper point gap. It should be 0.020" unless you have a mag (0.013")

Did it sit any lengh of time with out running?? Have you checked compression?? Sounds like it may have stuck rings and low compression. Put about a 1/4 cup tranny fluid in each cylinder and let it sit a day or 2 and then try to start it. Don't worry about the tranny fluid it will burn off fast plus moet of it will be in the pan by then. It will smoke badly but it also might run a lot better. I have a little crawler that had only about 50-60 psu on each cylinder and after doing the tranny fluid the compression went up to 90-100 per cylinder and has stay that way.

This is a long shot but it happend to a fellow I know and helped. His H wasn't getting any power and running rich when throttled up. I went over to help him diagnose as I sold him the H. As it was he left the tractor sit out and the oil bath cup slowly filled with water. When the weather got cold the water froze and only allowed enough air through to run at idle and lessoned high rpms with no power. He rebuilt the carb, set the valves and was at wits end until he emptied that air cleaner cup..

I would drain and clean the fuel tank and install a screen in the top of the sediment bowl. Then you could eliminate that.
