I was reading back through a couple of days worth of postings, and saw a question by a guy who was wondering about his Lucas alternator. Reminded me of this that I saw once before, which I thought was pretty funny:

Ever secure the coveted "Lucas, Price of Darkness" award?

The Lucas motto: "Get home before dark."

Lucas denies having invented darkness. But they still claim inventing "sudden, unexpected darkness".

Lucas--inventor of the first intermittent wiper.

Lucas--inventor of the self-dimming headlamp.

The three-position Lucas switch--DIM, FLICKER and OFF. The other three switch settings--SMOKE, SMOLDER and IGNITE.

Alexander Graham Bell invented the Telephone. Thomas Edison invented the Light Bulb. Joseph Lucas invented the Short Circuit.

You can laugh Pete here in the UK every British made tractors and veichles were fitted with Lucas electrics. They seemed to be allright as we did not know any better. I have a Fordson 1956 Diesel Major tractor wih all Lucss origenal electrics (the tractor as been in the family from new).I deal in Manitou farm handlers with Perkins engines and Lucas starters and thy struggle to last 2 yeras from fitting and we do not get real cold winters. "And never store your beer in a Lucas refrigerator,if you want it cold." Is another saying.
Lucas, like Motorola, and Prestolite (and French Ducellier) are absolute bears to find replacements, parts, and service.Going to a one wire Delco alternator can rid you of the problem on the charging side, but someone really needs to adapt Delco starters for use in British equipment.I'm no GM fan,but Delco was and still is the brand of choice for easy availability.

Fought a lucas starter on my 385 tractor. Had it fixed several times but just didn"t crank very fast and the tractor was hard to start. Finally took it to a different repair shop in Seattle and they told me there is a Delco to fit that tractor. End of problem.

Amen to that. While I have only heard bad things about lucus electric parts, only the Itallian Magnelli systems were worse. (IMHO) I used to drive a Fiat to work back in the 60's and if it rained I was lucky to get home. Delco systems are about as reliable as you can get.
