Recently purchased a 1944 Farmall "M" parts tractor with a MW hand clutch on it. I am not familiar with this option. Why would a farmer have this option on his tractor? Does it provide the same functions as a foot clutch? Does it allow "live power" to the PTO when engaged to stop the tractor? Is there any resale value on this type of clutch? Thanks for help!

M&W hand clutches sell for around $300 give or take.
Live power on a old tractor is a good thing.

Pretty much what everyone else has told you. You can down shift gears with the clutch disengaged ,the gears grind a little, but I don't think that we could upshift. I have one on a Super H it was pretty handy when I ran clover seed with it.

They are not that hard to disassemble or remove the entire unit form the tractor, just you will destroy the inner oil seal that seals to the pinion shaft. That seal was no longer available I had to take measurements from it and have a custom seal ordered (not that painful).

Sooo, there not that hard to work on and you can remove the entire unit and swap to another tractor. If you are going to do this post again and I can give you some more tips.

The hand clutches will add significantly to resale value. I would strongly recommend you rebuild the tractor rather than salvage it out. If the major casting dates match it should be an excellent tractor to restore.

Why is it a "Parts" tractor?

The M&W clutch disconnects the left bull gear from it's spur gear, essentially lifting the left wheel off the ground. So while it is dis-engaged, the differential spins but the tractor wheels get no power. If the main clutch is engaged, you still have the M PTO engaged and belly pump, effectively giving you live PTO and hydraulics.

You can use it to slow the tractor while letting the PTO retain full power.

I've also used it to help a novice like a kid or a friend's wife learn to drive the tractor. You can stand on the drawbar and let them have total control of the tractor unless it get's exciting, then you can pull the handle back (disengage) to get the tractor off power in a hurry. (I don't recommend this, of course, in this day and age of no personal responsibility, I don't recommend anybody do anything except sit at home alone in the dark, there is too much chance of their stupidity getting them hurt and blaming me. But it is something I do.)

Naturally, with the main clutch engaged and the transmission and differential spinning at engine speed, you can't shift gears unless you use the main clutch.

I've never removed or installed one, but since you have to remove the shaft into the left spider gear it can not be like removing a generator or water pump so unless the tractor is really bad, consider restoring it, or selling it at a profit to someone who wnats it.

Speaking of practices that are not recomended with a M&W Clutch, I had one on my Super M and used to put the tractor in reverse and then disengage the hand clutch so I could get off and manipulate the clutch (pushing it forward but not all the way in) to help me get implements hooked up. After about running myself over the second time I quit doing it.

That M&W hand clutch should have considerable resale value. I would ask that you consult a manual before you begin removing it, although it may not be that hard to do.

The hand clutch allows "live" hydraulics and pto. It's just a transmission clutch that allows you to stop the movement of the tractor, but leave power to everything else. You can't shift gears with it though. I wouldn't think that it would add much resale value to the tractor, but the clutches don't stay long in the "for sale" adds. Check out Vintage Ads. I have put the owners/operators/parts manual there. They are nice to have.
