Welp,I was fixing the snowblower and getting it ready for winter, hoping to never have to use it and I heard the door of my truck blow shut in the breeze. Well I cleaned up my tools, cleaned my hands and went to the truck to go home. The door is not fully closed but it is locked, with the keys inside and there's a damned cat sitting on the console. I assume it was trying to get out, leaned up on the window and stepped on the lock switch, locking the door. Well I tried to get in by getting a wire onto the rear door latch and hoping they would swing open(GM clubcab) , I got it open enough to wedge the door with a 2x4, enough room for the cat to finally squeeze out but not enough for me to get my arm up in to the lock switch. After about 15 minutes of fruitless effort I decided to get the old Powerwagon out of the shed and drove it home...no valid sticker..wonder what a judge would think of my excuse...damned cat...

1 stuff the cat back in there.
2 Once it gets hungry it'll start pacing around.
3 Eventually it'll step on the unlock switch.
4 Be there waiting, open the door, jetison the cat, drive home.
The End.

Michael
About lock outs!
One winter day I went out to do chores. Came back the wife had gone to work! and Yep the doors were locked.
Got lots done around the barn that day but was a bit chilled by 5:30 when she got home.

Eric: Your lockout reminds me of my wife, went out for the mail one winter day, discovered she had locked herself out. Had the dog with so going to my mother's or her mother's was not an option as they both lived in no pets seniors appartments.

An elderly senior and his wife (neighbors) invited her in for the day along with dog (Willie). Upon entering Willie boldly jumped up on the chesterfield. My wife was mortified, and scolded Willie quite harshly. "Oh", says the old gent." Willie is just fine, that is where he always lies when over here visiting with us." We had known for sometime Willie had a secret hangout. He would go missing and trying to find him, was impossible, may as well forget it.

Where do you hide the extra key?

Well, this isn't exactly a completely locked-out story. One Christmas, arriving at my cousin's in Vermont, I habitually hit the auto-lock button while exiting my '91 Mustang. The ice-over-gravel driveway had a bit of a grade to it and, I swear, they must've been out there with the curling brooms a few minutes before I got there. The emergency brake was _on_. Oh they had a good time watching me running after my sliding-away car, fumbling with the keys, getting the door open so I could try to maneuver it away from the road.

The cat MAY not even have had anything to do with it. If it is a late-model GM pickup or SUV, sometimes the doors will lock with no apparent reason.

There was recently a thread about this on another message board. Supposedly, if you bump the lock switch just so while getting out, and certain other things freak out the security system, the doors will lock something like 10 seconds later.

They explained the exact sequence of events there, but I still say the #$&% doors sometimes lock with no apparent reason. That has happened twice with our 2002 Yukon.

Stupid, stupid, stupid excess of electronics on these modern vehicles SUCKS!

There is a simple solution... Take the keys with you. In this day and age I am baffled as to why anyone, under any circumstances, would exit their vehicle without the keys in hand.

BTW, my 2003 Chevy has crank windows and manual locks. It's not that you can't get trucks without all the fancy electronics, it's that you don't want to. Blame the electronics when it's your fault for buying the fancy-schmancy jacked-up 4x4 dually... Makes lots of sense to me.

Amen, Brother. One of the reasons I keep throwing money at my '88 Dakota and my '89 Chevy.

Fawteen: I'd go further back than that, how about a nice 66 IH pickup, model 1200 with 264 engine and 4 speed. Would dearly love to find one.

It's not my intention to be churlish, but it took me a grand total of one time to figure out the importance of hiding an extra key on my vehicle. I've used it many a time and it is good for peace of mind when not in use.

I abandoned my pickup last October for a Honda del Sol... went from 15 mpg to 45 mpg. It's nice to drive and drive and pay $24 to fill up instead of the $80 I was paying in the pickup, before gas prices even reached $3 per gallon!

Good thing you had the Powerwagon!

Magman, we have lots of whitetails in our county, close to 500 deer car accidents this year and that's just the ones that got reported. We have 150 acres of bush and have a small cabin in it. I let 3 hunters from Sarnia(across from Port Huron Michigan)use it for a week every year. Last year I went back and they had 4 of the nicest big bucks I ever laid eyes on hanging from a tree in front of the cabin. The nice part is they brought me half a deer all cut and wrappped for letting them hunt there....yes we have whitetails..corn and grain fed..taste like beef...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Years ago our neighbors bought a ew Ford pickuup and took it out for the first ride, they decided to switch drivers, so pull off to the side of the road and both got out and shut the doors, and the locks had been locked, keys were in the ignition and engine running, and it was raining!

nebor rancher lady can tell a good one on herself. New Cadilac, she gets out to open a gate, wind blows door shut and it automaticly locks leaving her afoot and car is still running! Say, not I tell you. Those auto-locks got disabled pronto.

Thanks for the story. A reminder for me to get another key hidden on my vehicle - a must for all cross-country trips but I've let the practice go of late.

I have a 1994 Ford extended cab that I bought new. One of the very first times I took my boys a long and got out with the motor running, one of them hit the lock button as he was crawling out the passenger door and like a good little fellow closed it behind him (first time for everything). We were all locked out. Fortunately, it was at home and I could go get the other set to get in. Since then I always carry a second key and have hidden one in the frame under the truck (just in case). Power locks are neat, but…
