oil pressure in an A

Installed a new oil pressure guage in the Super A and I have to say it's quite a busy needle. When I start her up cold it jumps up fast to the center, a good thing I guess, then after warm up it goes back down to about a quarter (not sure how many pounds that is) but lets say two notches on the guage. When reved a bit it raises accordingly to about a third or a notch or two below half way. Now, I'm running 10/30 in her, so I'm thinking maybe it has to do with the oil thinning as it heats up?? I know these old fours don't put out much pressure, but is this normal.....?

A lot of the older engines don't like muti weight oils. I'd put say a 30W in it and see what happens.

That doesn't sound too bad to me.
The manual reccomends 30 wt oil for summer, and 20 wt for winter, if I recall correctly. I tried 10-30 in my B and didn't have as much oil pressure as I had with 30 wt, so I went back to the 30.

I would but the winters here get pretty cold and I'm going to use her for plowing snow, so I need a lighter oil in her. The detergent oil really cleaned her out and I changed the oil again after just a few hours as it needed to be flushed of the gunk. I will change it out again after a few more hours of work. The pressure gets better with each oil change so I am assuming the oil is doing a good job of opening up some clogged arteries. And no leaks like some folks claim when you use detergent oil...

I run 30w in summer and 10w in winter in my A. I use it for plowing snow and I get about the same pressure in winter as summer due to the cold thickening the oil. We get down to -20 sometimes but normally about 10 above is a normal cold spell and, with 30 weight, it won't crank more than about 3 turns and not fast enough to start so 10w lets me get it started and has oil flow immediately whereas 30w will let her knock for a while before building pressure and doing it's lube job. good luck

Fenton, As someone else stated, 30w in summer and I use 20w in winter and the tractor starts much easier. Just a suggestion!

You can use 30wt year around, but you would probably need a block heater for extreme temps and you would only need to plug it in when required. You could try 10-40 and see if it raises your oil pressure when engine is at operating temp. Using a block heater it won't
kill your battery when starting since the engine will crank easier. Hal
