HELP! Nephew was digging in the dirt when, all of a sudden, the tractor would not move out of neutral. We looked a bit and found that he had broken the shifter linkage shaft that goes thruogh the tranny case. We have the top cover off and figured out what we have to do, but we can't get the broken piece out of the case. It has a smal gear that hooks it into a fork. Does the fork have to come off befor the shaft comes out or what?? Any help would be GREATLY appreiciated! Thanks!

I have the same problem with my 454. How did you get the linkage\shaft out and more importantly, how does the new longer shaft go in. Also, where did you find the replacement part. Thanks

Here is a photo of the broken shaft. Any ideas as to how to remove it?
Thanks!

I assume the shaft is broken on the outside of the case, or near flush with the outside. From the photo it appears that there is a retainer uust inside the casting. Maybe a snap ring? allowing the shaft to come out of the splines in the lever. If not more than a little dissassembly may be required to get it out to the inside. Putting it back together will require more room because the new (or repaired) shaft will be longer.

Best Guess JimN

Well - the shaft broke about 1/4 into the casting. There is no snap ring, as the broken part will slide in and out, but won't quite come out of the fork befor the gear hits the case. Any ideas as to how to remove the fork?

In the picture I see what appear to be screws holding on the top pivot where the fork on the lever is mounted. If this screw was removed, and the lever mooved as far as it can go toward the right in the photo, the lever might clear the shift rail and be able to be taken off the shaft. The sliding gear will need to be moved (down in the picture) to allow the shaft to pull out left. If the shaft will not clear the shaft, the tranny will need to come apart, because the new shaft will need to go in rfom that end. My best ideas, JimN Keep me in the loop.
