Getting a dual wheel front set up for our "M" and it has the wedge with it. Does the wedge serve to push the front wheels backward or forward. I have heard both stories on this and need to know from the experts. Thanks to all!!!!
It had a single front wheel previously.

Pappy This as been on this forum many times in the past and everyone has missed the point. Whether or not it helps steering or makes it harder. The wedge is marked with the ward front. The idea was to set the wheels forward to help stop shimmy and it does help many times.

Mornin' Feller,

What is this "wedge" thing you guys are talkin' about? Is this a "trike" thing or something?

Never heard of it.

Allan

Punch below for a photo of the wedge that came installed on my Super H.

As Aces notes it's clearly marked FRONT on the thin side of the casting. So when it's installed it moves the centerline of the front wheels closer to the bolster centerline (i.e. it reduces steering caster)

With the wedge in place the steering wheel turns easier when stopped or going very slow . But if the steering is loose, the front wheels are less inclined to wobble at high speed without the wedge.

Allen on the narrow fronts its used between the post with hubs and the steering shaft were the 4
bolts are.Its tapered to change the caster.I looked at 4 hanging in shed and none of those were marked front or rear, one had a paper tag on it but was not readable. All tractors with wedge that show up here have the thick edge to rear and look like they put on that way years ago.

This is very interesting. Then why did they move the pedestal back on the Bs they said it was to make steering easier. We put one on the M like in 1950 moved pedestal back and it sure steered easier really noticed when the picker was on.

Mine has the thick part of the wedge in back so the wheels tilt forward and I don"t believe mine has ever been tampered with. Brian

Well, Pappy I guess you don't get the "correct answer" seems evenly split on move the front forward or back! Not sure but I think I've seen the wedge itself marked front or back. Would be worth a look. My nickel Dick Davis

thick part to the back. this makes steering easier. this gives the same angle as the super m bolster.

As JUNKMAN says moving back will steer easier and that is what thrie purpose was. Try it and then judge for yourself.

I have several wedges on shelf and wondered myself what was the advantage of them and what was correct direction for installation. I was told they are made to make tractor steer better. One of my M's I purchased has bolester angled forward, another back. I mess with Harley's and have always experianced the more the forword rack, the harder it is to steer. I would think that the little bit of negative rack would make steering easier when moving. Just my opinion, I would also like to no the truth.

I believe the wedge pushes the wheels forward, sort of like the way a bicycle front wheel is angled forward to provide more stability.
