Just wanted some opinions on a 504 gas row crop. There is one coming up on a sale. NF, fenders, 3 point, 1962 model. We had one when I was growing up. My dad was told it had 45 hp, which was about what an "M" was supposed to have. He never thought it would do the work of an "M" in the field though. We had a loader on it almost all the time. It was a very nice tractor when he bought it (about 1971) had flat top IH fenders with lights and a 3 point. What kind of experience has anyone else had with these tractors?

I agree with these other guys that the 504 is a handy tactor. I own a 62 and have worked it the same as I have worked M's, SM's and SMTA's as I have all those as well. I can comfortably compare the 504 to between M & SM for power. The tractor gets insulted when folks call it a "souped up C". The higher RPM is the big key to it's success. I have also run this 504 in the local pull and ran right up with the M's & WD's in distance. It is a very good all around machine esp. with the live PTO/HYd/PS etc. be sure to get at least a 2 pt fast hitch - helps for that extra "bite" when pulling something. good luck and enjoy! BTW - search "1962" in the photo gallery to see mine all shined up plus it will appear in the KGLO Tractor Ride 2006 calendar.

I have a "66 Farmall 504 gasser. Its a nice original that has been well taken care of..... ....I really like it for light loader work, raking hay, and moving equipment. But the gassers just don"t have it under the hood. I didn"t ever bother taking to mine to the field other than on the manure spreader or hay rake.

Wow! That has to be one of the nicest 504's I have ever seen. Great job on that one. Most of the ones I have seen have been beaten into the ground. Don't see many 504's around here. Unfortunately, we don't see a lot of red around here anymore either.

You'll find with many of the newer tractors (post-hundred series) that the four-cylinder engines are rated for higher horsepower in smaller chassis. Our 2500A is a 200 cubic in. engine rated at around 53 hp. Our W6 has a 248 cubic in. engine and is rated at 37 hp. A W9 is rated at 50 hp. I can honestly say that the W6 would kick the 2500's rear in every pulling category. (The W9 would trump both of them) While the 2500 has more horsepower, it probably has half the torque of the W6 mill, and could get away with it because of the gear reduction systems being used to magnify the tractor's torque. Horsepower doesn't pull anything, it is torque that actually gets it done. The later engines do have wider powerbands, and work great for non-pulling tasks (raking, conditioning, loader work, etc.)due to the extra features (TA, live hydraulics, disc brakes) and were a lot smoother running than their forebearers. Whether the last one is important in a farm tractor is debatable though. The 504 is a great tractor for small tasks and such. If you want it, go ahead and get it. Sorry for the long post.

I like them. They are a good chore type tractor. HP may be that of an M but they aren't a real torque machine. As many have pointed out they are a trumped up Super C engine wise. Really they do much better. I liken it more to an H with modern hydrolics and sheetmetal. They aren't a great plow tractor but for raking hay and general putt around use they are really handy, easy on gas and fun. I think a 504 is just about the best looking tractor IH made too.
