The SMD will run on the diesel side, but, I can't get it to start on the gas side. It is getting spark, and getting gas. I took the carb off twice to make sure it was cleaned out good, but it still won't start on gas. The butterfly's are opening and closing as they should. Any help is appreciated.

As Jani says, you need to pull the valve cover and make sure the decompression valves are opening. You don"t say what it is doing when you try to start on gas, but this is one possibility. Also, are you sure you have the spark timing correct. Note that the distributor rotates counter clockwise when you face it. So the plug wires must be connected correct for that rotation. Also, if you have a magneto, it may be 180 degrees out of time and it won"t start then either. If it is 180 degrees out of time, or the plug wires are hooked for clockwise rotation, it will blow oil back out of the air cleaner.

The Third Valve in the cyilined head may not be opening (it is the only thing you didn't mention)
there is linkage on the outside of the head that moves a cam on the inside.

How did you start it on Diesel? They usually won't with the starter, the starter won't spin it.

If it is the same difficulty turning the engine when trying to start it on gas as when on diesel, I'd suspect this system.

They normally start like an gas M on gas. Meaning very easily little choke and just a few turns.

The only way I can get it started on Diesel is to pull it. Thanks for your reply
