What size diesel engine did (Ray Fisher) put in his 1940 Farmall "M". It was a diesel V-8 out of an 815 I-H Combine. My neighbor wants to do the same to his 400 Farmall .

Richard: I wouldn't get too excited about V8 diesels for any use other than a pickup. V8 diesels have not been a roaring sucess. I base this on the very limited use given V8 diesels. A very small percentage of diesels sold are V8, whether it be trucks, farm, forestry or construction equipment. Companies will almost always go with larger inline sixes rather than V8s. There has to be a good reason. The V8s I've seen don't hold a candle to similar cubic inch sixes, even somewhat smaller sixes often out perform them.

I also thought as the others have said, IH never used a V8 diesel in a combine, just wasn't sure.

It is hard to beat an inline six. Just take a look at all the major engine and machine players today. The inline six dominates (until you get into the monster machines). You can produce more torque out of an inline six, than a V-8. Also, inlines (4, 6, 8) are inherently balanced statically and dynamically. This is also true with V-12 & 16's. V-8 engines on the other hand produce a rotating couple that must be eliminated. This is done through counterweighting.
