How hard is it to start a 400 Diesel in 20 degree weather - tractor sitting inside a cold block garage? I"m looking at one to be my PTO generator tractor and I was wondering if I"ll be buying a bunch of trouble.

The MD I owned in Montana (30 miles from Canada) would start on gas at 15 below without the block heater. I used the heater for two hours before starting at 30 below. I ran 15-40 oil in it and that was the limiting factor. 3-4 min on gas and not a puff of grey, it was going nicely.

It starts on gasoline, so it starts no harder than any gasoline-powered tractor at that temperature. If you've got the gas ignition system tuned up, you'll be fine.

Be aware that the tractor won't do any more than idle on gasoline, so it's not like you can use the gas system as a backup to run your generator.

Actually, they start a lot easier than a gasoline engine, because of low compression and retarded spark.

I started the one I had once 7 below out side 5:00 AM snowing and the wind blowing. I did have a block heater pluged in.

Heck no,

Cold weather is where those old shuttles shine.

Just let it warm up a little longer before you throw the lever over to the diesel side.

It would start better if you have a block or coolant heater installed to preheat the engine.
Soviet's use fuel fired heaters and they will start at -65 degrees with 10 minutes of preheat.

In 20+ degree weather you should'nt have any trouble. Them tractors all seem to start diferent. My 450 diesel will start down about zero, after that for get it. My WD9 will start at an temp.

If you can get the gas motor to start the diesel will fire also. I do not have a problem starting my MD in Zero degree Wisconsin weather when it is sitting outside in the wind. Just be sure to have a good battery, good starter, fuel anti-gel in the diesel tank, and a good hand to run the choke on the gas side. It should be ok for your purposes if the motor is in good shape right now. just my .02 cents
