I've got an 806 diesel. Can it handle an 18 ft field cultivator?

Fella has an IH 45 field cult for sale and is asking $850. Is this a good price?

What should I watch out for?

Your 806 will play with an 18 footer, assuming you are running duals. If you are running singles you will get quite a bit of slippage.

I bought a IH 45 at a sale for a fellow at work. We gave $115 for it. It didn't have much factory paint left on it, but it worked fine and had a cylinder for the lift and harrow out back. He pulls it with his 450. We do have to fold the wings up in heavy soil.

Yes it can. We used to pull a 20 footer with our 806. It pulled it like a champ. It was 3 point mounted and a little heavy but the rock box in the front took care of that problem.

I sold my 18 ft hydraulic fold IH45 for $150. Shovels needed replacement if covering many acres. Probably sold too cheap, but there isn't any market around here for a smaller field cultivator with limited trash clearance. I tried to pull it one spring with a MM 1050 (dynoed at 118 bhp) in bean stubble, approx 3.5 inches deep, and moved at a snails pace. If you are disking before using the IH45, then no problem pulling it with an 806. Otherwise you will go very slow or just skim the ground. Bought a larger Wilrich which can handle trash much better, and either pull it with the IH 5288 or the IH 4166. Works a lot better!

Realized forgot to mention it also had a 4-bar Remingler spike harrow on back

Hi Michael,

Boy! I think that is one heck of a good price!

Your tractor can handle that implement very easily.

How do you like your vibrashank so far?

Any helpful hints to pass along to a cityboy-farmer wannabe?

Michael: There is really only two items to watch for; wear in the pivot points of each shank. If the pivot holes are enlarged those parts are quite expensive. The other item you watch for is twisted frame. I saw this once and cultivator cut deeper on one side than the other. They had sprung the lift mechanism towing behind a pickup in transport position.

I personally would look for an S tine cultivator. I bought both new in my farming days. S tine is a much better cultivator and a lot less on repairs. Vibra shanks probably cost $35. each while S shanks are under $10. You will break more Vibra shanks than S shanks.

Okay, another dumb question. What is the pivot point?

Also, if I buy this, I'll tow it home with my pickup. Any helpful hints in this area (e.g., how to avoid a sprung lift mechanism)?

It's the horizontal bolt on which the shank trips (pivots) if it hits a rock. The spring holds the other end of the shank tight against the stop. If you follow the shank up from the ground, it attaches to a casting. The pivot point will go through this casting crossways.

On this model, it's a 1/2" bolt. There's a bushing inside. If you pull the shank sideways with your hands, the bolt shouldn't move much at these points. If it does, it has seen a lot of use and will need some parts to fix.

Unless you have really heavy clay, your 806 will work well with an 18' in 4L or 1H. We pulled a 21' with ours in 1H.

Michael I pull a 21 foot field cultivator with my 806. It has a turbo, I run in high 1 with the TA forward. That is a buy on the field cultivator. Where in NE Iowa are you from? I am from NE Iowa.
