Was at a show a couple of weeks back. Gent
there had a 300U just like mine, but lots
nicer :-)

Anyways, one of his "tips" was "If the TA
lever doesn"t move back at least a quarter
inch when you press the clutch, you gotta adjust her, or you risk spilling TA guts
all over the case when you pull the TA."
Something about the bearings in the TA
being held in by the tension, etc.

I stepped on the clutch on mine and find
that the lever probably *could* move, if it was under full spring tension.

But what"s this all about anyway?

Is there some magic adjustment sequence
that tells you you"ve got it right?

I don't think you got very good advice at the show. The only thing I can add to what Aces and Paul have said is get a manual and go by the book and to the letter. Close does not count with these. The manual will be money well spent.

The TA is a pain to adjust and keep in adjustment, but its very much required.Mine would grind gears even with the clutch all the way down.I adjusted it,and now its like a different tractor....no grinding, and ever so smooth clutch engagement....its like a 2005 300U! Well...not quite....but close!

Gascolator I woudl have to disagree, if the TA lever moves when you depress the main clutch then the clutchs are not adjusted right and should be adjusted. When the main clutch is fully depresed and the TA lever pulled back the pin in the linkage between the 2 should be just snug. The thing that could happen in his case he might not be releasing the TA clutch when in TA and cause it to wear. The adjustment is critcal and should be check often.
