Fan Belt Installation for IH H Tractor

My neighbor has an IH model H tractor. Last Saturday the fan belt broke; we put a new belt on but had to really pry hard to get the new belt on and then it was really tight. Today, the new belt broke after less than 6 hours of use. The crankshaft pulley and the fan drive pulley looks like they're not lined up exactly right, but there seems to be no adjustment.

What is the correct belt size and how should the belt be installed? Thanks.

Good heavens whatever you do make sure that you screw the screw in with your fingers and THEN tighten the nut with a wrench. I ruined the pulley on my SM a couple weeks ago and it has been living hell. I did the entire procedure, from removing belt to putting new one back on and tightening up, in less than 25 minutes. But a split second mistake has costed me perhaps 60 hours of labor, and I am still not completed with my repair. Involved removing radiator, fan, part of pulley (on M's you can screw the sliding pulley off, you can't do that on an H) put a new pulley on off my OTHER SM (so the hunt for that part continues) and I JB Welded a nut on the pulley because the threads were stripped out, so when I put the bolt on it will be in a nut, tightened with another nut. All it has to do is get me into October. But I have run out of time now. I have a corn picker to pick up, a threshing show to power, and loads to haul when I am custom harvesting. I made sure it will get me by until winter, but if this works as good as I hope it will, I will leave it alone until this belt goes bad, hopefully a long ways off. Good gracious, though, whatever you do, don't be stupid like me. I had someone tell me "Well, that's how you learn." It has been a hard lesson to learn, and I will try my hardest to NEVER let this happen to any one else AGAIN!!!

Robert, John just gave you the step by step process you need to follow. Boy, how I wish he wrote for the IT and other service manuals. I had one apart a couple of weeks ago and it wasn't that bad but did see how it could be a real challenge. The patience part and soft tapping will be your friends. I think the second belt broke because of your installation process and maybe the first one due to being 50 years old. Good luck and have a great holiday. Hal

The adjustment is by means of a threaded sheave on one side of the pulley located on the fan hub. Look closely at that pulley, and you'll see threads on the front portion of the hub. You'll also find a set screw with a locking nut on it. Loosen the nut, then remove the set screw. Actually you don't have to totally remove it, but....it may have been 20-30 years since that pulley's been adjusted. My advice is to remove it totally. Spray some good penetrating oil into the hole where the set screw had been, and turn it up on top so the oil can start working on the threads. If you have a wire brush, clean the threads in front of the pulley. If you don't have a wire brush, use an old toothbrush and some carb cleaner or more penetrating oil. When the threads look pretty clean, use a long punch and a hammer to TAP on the raised boss opposite where you removed the set screw. Tap it one way for a while, then the other way, until it starts to turn. (Note: do NOT CLOBBER THAT HUB AND BREAK IT!) Patience is required in this adventure!
Once the hub has been cleaned and loosened until it will turn freely on those threads by hand, you're ready to put on a new belt, tighten the hub, and re-install the set screw. Don't forget the lock nut! The end of the set screw is supposed to go into the groove machined into the threaded portion. I replaced the one my '49 M a couple of years ago, and it took me well over an hour to get it all cleaned, loose, and put back together. It's amazing how much dirt can lodge in those threads!
The belt does not have to be extremely tight to work well. A similar system is used to tighten the generator belt, with the movable pulley sheave being on the generator.

John D, nice explanation - especially the patience part! My M took a lot longer than an hour - (It involved a wide front end removal). Doesn't the book call for 3/4" of slack in the belt? My nickel Dick Davis

You should never pry a belt over the side of a pulley to install it. It damages the internal cord and will usually only last a little while. That is the same reason that a belt that has been thrown off frequently will not stay on afterwards.

The adjustment is on the fan pully theres a set screw to lock it. The way it works is the pulley sort of screws tighter to make to belt tight.

I presently have an H waiting in the wings for restoration. The previous owner did not use patience on that pulley. I can show you what a broken one looks like.
