I bought a 48H a few weeks ago. The seller said the engine was stuck. He wanted $300 and it looked good for lots of parts so I took it. The engine was not stuck, but one valve was stuck in closed position so I took to head to a machine shop for overhaul. While cleaning up the top of the block and sleeves I noticed #3 piston (dome type) has several dents on the outside edges of the dome. My question is can the valves be set so tight that they will hit the top of the piston and if that is what has happened am I now looking at replacing sleeves and pistons? It doesn't look like the piston is cracked or has a hole in it but don't know if my eyes are good enough to tell for sure-Any Advice will be appreciated.

Those valves on No3 may have been stuck open and the piston may have hit them. Hal

Nahh, if the piston goes up and down Ok it is probably alright. That old stuff is pretty forgiving. But you may want to put in new rings while you have it apart. Do the cylinder walls seem glazed? Is there much of a ring groove at the top?

The sleeves seem exceptionally smooth-no wear ring near the top that I can feel. There is some light rust spots in the #3 sleeve that I can feel with my finger tips, but it will turn over easy and I can't feel any noticeable drag resistance at any point while cranking it by hand. For El Toro-the only valve that was stuck when I took the head off was completely closed-not to say that sometime in the past both valves were not open when contact was made with the piston top. I just figured some one might have screwed the rocker arm down so tight that the valves were opened to far and banged against the piston.
