You can get new batteries from Sam's Club. Here's a website for new cables. Hal

966D with one battery? What's in the other battery box? You need TWO NEW BATTERIES! Never replace just one. These old 966's should start before you can even get your thumb off the button.
But if one of those batteries is shot you don't have a prayer. It will cost you 180 bucks but your tractor will come to life whenever, whatever.

You need more battery! Should have two big 950 CCA 6-volt batteries in series. Two 12's in parallel can also be used, like an 86 series. If you have ANY doubt about the battery cables, replace them. They may look clean, but they're probably corroded on the inside. They need to be very heavy, at least 2/0. It's amazing what a difference new cables make.

I agree,

Get 2 new batteries and new cables before you burn that starter up.

If (and only if) the battery/s are not at fault as pointed out correctly by Allan in NE. The starter could need a rebuild. The bushings can be worn enough to allow the armature to drag on the field poles causing radical amps not much turning. I've also seen shorted armature to ground cause slow spin. With hot battery/s and good cables/solenoid, slow cranking is a bad starter.
I hope they are correct.
