I own a IH240U with a loader, how much trouble is it to rebuild the Hydraulic Control Lift Valve just in front of the gas tank, that controls the loader unit, any suggestions will be appreciated, thanks

I was just wondering if any of you IH240 owners know where I can find to purchase a rear wheel weight, one of mine was lost some place in the brush so I need just one, there is a casting number on it if that will help, #351374-R1 this weight has 4 bolt holes that measure 9-3/4 inches from bolt to bolt. I sure do appreciate your help. Regards, Joe

Joe, are you talking the Hydra-Touch control valves? I have a problem w/mine as the system is constantly under pressure as there is a problem with the relief valve somewhere. Now the thing won"t start and I am getting tired of tractors not starting/running and with me moving I am thinking of selling off the stuff. Mine has power steering. Does yours, also, mine "59, what year is yours. Thanks, Al

Al, the problem with your 240 is in the regulator/saftey valve. It is located in the bank of hydraulic valves under/ahead of the fuel tank. It's the one with no linkage attached to it. I belive it can be repaired without removing it, but removal is pretty simple, I took mine all the way out so I could give it a good cleaning. Only problem doing it this way is that you disturb the o-rings located between the hydraulic valves and need to replace them all, 29 of them if I remember right, if your tractor has three control valves. Repair of the regulator/saftey valve is very simple. Remove the end cover, which is held on by four bolts. There's a heavy spring pushing against this cover, so remove two bolts in opposite corners, replace them with bolts that are about an inch longer, and then slowly loosen the other two bolts. Once you get the cover off, you'll see two piston bores. What appears to be a screw head will be located between the two bores. Screw it out, and you'll find that it is the orifice screen. It is probably plugged, so get a new one from your Case-IH dealer. Remove the two pistons from their bores and clean them with very fine emery cloth. One or both pistons have an o-ring, which will need to be replaced. Replace the cover gasket, and reassemble the valve. Should now be back to normal.

Hi Al, I'm not sure what year my is, I know that they made the 240U from 1958 to 1961, I don't have power steering, and I do ok with out it... Does your tractor have the hydraulic control handle just right of the steering wheel ? That's what mine has, and the hydraulic valve is under the hood just a-head of the gas tank, but the bucket will slowly go down when when it sits, so I need to rebuild the darn thing cause it's leaking by, and not giving me full power I'm sure.

Joe, start by rebuilding your loader cylinders. The control valves on a 240 are spool valves. The sealing inside the valve is accomplished by machining the spool to a precision fit inside the housing bore, which makes the spool and housing a matched set. Aside from the seals at the end of the valve, which just prevent oil from leaking externally and dirt from entering, there's nothing you can replace inside the valve to stop leakage. It takes a special tool to reassemble the detent anyway. How fast does your loader settle? If we're talking a few hours, that's pretty much normal. You can't expect these valves to seal 100%, and it's not very safe to leave your loader or other implements off the ground when you're not using the tractor anyway.

Thank You for your information K.B. I was suspicious of the loader cylinders, so I did rebuild them all and put new hoses on them, you ask how fast does the loader settle !, well, when I load fire wood in the bucket, the bucket being about 1 foot off the ground, it takes about 10/15 minutes to reach the ground as I'm loading it, I sure agree with not leaving it off the ground when not in use, I also figured that hydraulic valves that leak by, would be not as strong as they should be. thanks for your information,
