My 300U is overheating now. I thought it was the thermostat so I put a new one in yesterday. Its still overheating. She was up at about 220 and I felt the lower hose coming out of the pump and it was cold, so the pumps not working. What can go wrong with these pumps? Its still tight and not leaking. Did the impeler fall apart? Can these pumps be rebuilt? I looked one up on the internet and they want $220.00. Where would I take it to get rebuilt? Thanks for any help.

The lower hose comes from the radiator, not the pump. It is a suction hose from the rad. It should be very warm (but below thermostat temp). If you disconnect the hoses from the engine (when cool) and plug the top radiator hose (a jelly lid or such clamped into the hose), while leaving the bottom open to the ground (or a big pan if you are inside), you can tell if the core is plugged as follows: Time how long it takes to fill a five gallon bucket using your garden hose. If it takes two minutes or less there is enough flow to check the radiator. If longer, you will need to use a bucket into an open funnel to get enough volume. If the radiator can take all of the hose flow without backing up, it should be ok. if not, it is clogged. (I have seen a water pump that spun the impeller on the shaft, but only one!) Another way to test is to install another radiator our of some other vehicle (it is ugly, but you do not have to go any where) and see if it solves the problem. Good luck, Jim Nicholson

Randy - I agree with the others - problem's most likely a plugged up radiator.

FWIW the failure mode of the water pump almost always leaking or noisy/wobbling bearings - I've never seen one quit pumping.

I'll remove the lower hose and see if any flow is coming out thru the bottom. Maybe I can take a hose and back flush it from there. I think your right about the problem being with the radiator or the block.

My guess since I can't look at what your system is doing would be a clogged up rad/block. I'd drain the system when cold. Then I'd fill it with vinagar and run it till it was good and hot or and hour which ever happened first. Let it cool down and drain that. Then I'd make an adaptor so you could hook a garden hose to the block drain and flush it out with water. Leave the cap off when you flush it with water and let it run for an hour or 2. Also you will want to remove the themo when you do that.

Look into the radiator when the engine is at an idle to see if any coolant circulation is present.
Your tubes may be blocked in the radiator preventing circulation. Feel the exterior surface of the radiator to see if it is hot all
over. Be careful doing this. Hal
