I've cleaned up my steering shaft and gearbox area. Bought new pivot shaft oil seal, felt washer and retainer and now ready to re-install. What have people been using (successfully, that is) for a grease on the steering shaft bearing? Was thinking of good wheel bearing grease. Would that work?

I've had good luck with gun grease but the corn head lube might be better.

With the oil seal and felt washer replaced, I've heard folks who've been able to return to using the original 90 weight oil and it doesn't leak out. More common are steering assemblies that have some sort of leak or another - my H included. Per a post on this forum, I've been using John Deere Corn Head lube. It's a type of grease about the consistency of mayonaise - tends to flow into the gears in use (unlike some greases that the gears just dig holes in) yet it doesn't leak out. Since you've rebuilt your steering box, I'd try the oil and then, if it still has any leaks, the corn head lube.

Thanks. When I get ready to grease up the steering gearbox I'll try to John Deere Corn Head grease. What about the steering shaft bearing?

For the center and rear steering shaft bearings (the long horizontal shaft that concludes in the steering wheel) I just use general-purpose grease - whatever is in the grease gun. I still get squeaks and I suppose there's a way to get them to hold the grease better but, per the owner's manual, lubing on those is daily or after every 10 hours of operation.
