All right boys, I thank all of you for your input. I had suspected your feelings all along but wanted to hear from folks with more experence than me. I have had many of the letter series, and only one IH Diesel (1566, which I loved, but I scaled down). I have heard of the cavitation problems with the 66's But I have no complants with the one I had. Well,,,806 it is!!

biggerred: During my farming days I had 16 different Farmalls, most of them bought new or close to new. While I never had an 806, some of my friends and neighbors did have them. I did have at least one tractor from each series, letter series through to 66 series. The smallest being a SA and the largest being a 1066.

In my opinion from a farmer-user point of view the 06 and 56 series tractors are the very best IH ever built. It was all down hill after that. My friends and neighbors agreed on that. It looks like yours are doing the same, witness these posts.

I'll go along with Wolfman. I've seen it written in some book, some where: "...the 806 is arguably the best tractor ever made."

Please forgive me, I am sorry, "The 806 is not, argueably, the best tractor ever made" The 8s and 1206s are the best tractors ever made. I think it was Guy Fay or Andy Kruushar (SP?) who reported that 15K - 20K hrs were not uncommon when respectably used and maintained. Mine was a 1206. Yeah, they make 'em bigger; but they do not make em better. best, Phil

Biggerred, I have an 806 and it is the most reliable, low maintaince tractor i have ever had. It has had a turbo on it all it's life putting out 120+ horse, has 9000 hrs. on it and uses no oil. The head or the pan has never been off. I honestly believe that if you would take good care of it, it would last a life time. It is very fuel efficent too. I have a 986 and a 1066 hydro and it will run the shorts of of either one of them. I am a dairy farmer so it get used, but not abused. Thats just my 2 cents worth. Keith

The best. After the 560 was introduced too quickly, they busted their tails to make the 06's bulletproof. The 806 will go down in history as one of the quality tractors made. Many have over 10,000 hrs & basically haven't been touched in terms as major repairs.

My dad purchased an International 806 new in the 60's. It was his first new tractor replacing a D6 Caterpillar. We worked ground exclusively with it and collectively my brothers and I put countless hours on it over the years. That tractor has had no down time due to any significant engine problems. The rear end has needed some attention and thats about it. I remember the thing turned on a dime and drove well.It is still a working tractor though it is relegated to ditching and throwing levies (irrigated vegetable crops, Salinas Valley California). Newer bigger, much bigger tractors have replaced it.
My uncle who farmed next to us had the same tractor with four wheel assist. It has since been lost to humanity and I wish I new where it was.
I don't know about best or not but I can tell you it was really good!

In my family we run red tractors,&H,560D,706G,2 806D,1256,986,1586& aMX240.When I was a kid we didnt have the cab tractors. Our 806S were are big tractors.1 is a 1965 with around 10,000hrs,and its still a good tractor. The other is a 1967 one of the last ones made, with 7300hrs on it. It came from the factory with 18.4.38 tires. They use less fuel, than any of the other tractors when pulled just as hard, and are by far the best tractors we own. Wouldnt sale them for the world...
