Squealing Rear Axle on H

H clutch-pedal side rear axle squeals while moving in reverse. Same side has had a trans oil leak from the bearing retainer. Shot about 20 strokes of grease (small caulk-cylinder-sized grease gun) into zerk in retainer and then ran it in 4th for about 100 yds - thinking the slow work I'd been doing (log skidding) hadn't thrown enough oil up there. The squeal went away for one day and now is back.

All my shots of grease havn't spit any grease out the outer seal. Do I need to add more until that happens?

Does this symptem indicate:
1) I should add grease until I see it oozing out of the bearing retainer
2) new seal time
3) new bearing and seal time

Thanks for your time.

Dave, I suspect that any extra grease that is put into that grease zirk will go into the rear end, not come out the seal- at least not until you ran maybe 50 gallons if grease in there and it filled up the final drive cavity!

Try jacking up the wheel on the left side and turning by hand; you may be able to isolate the exact position of the squeal. There is a strong possibility that the rear inner bearing behind the bull gear is in the process of collapsing. The danger here is that a ball may get between the bull gear and the housing, especially in reverse with disastrous results, namely a nasty hole in the rear end housing.

How do I tell if this is the case? Will I hear the squeal from deeper in the axle housing?

Have you checked the rear end grease level ? Are you sure that it is the seal ? My H make a chattering noise on the left side, in reverse, but I think that it is due to the brake band catching. If that's it, you can see the pin in the pedal adjuster vibrate.

Well, now that you mention it, I did replace the cam to that brake about a month ago. Let me take this opportunity to tell anyone who's reading, if you're having trouble getting a brake on an H to adjust, check to make sure the two cam plates in the cam assembly are aligned. I had one twisted and replacing the cam pin assembly (my naming) made a night-and-day difference. Both my brakes are sound now as a result. Thanks, I'll check that in the morning.

I'm pretty sure it's something surrounding the axle though. The squeal is dead-on coming from the retainer.

The seal should not be tight enough to squeal. You might try squirting a little grease under it with a horse sized hypodermic needle and see if that makes any difference. I have never had grease appear at the seal when greasing the rear axle.
