I need some serious ideas. I can't get the governor to control the throttle. It will idle when the adjuster rod holds the rocker shaft forward, the governor loses control when the rod is pulled back even slightly. It acts like the governor weights are not moving out or not forcing the sleeve and bearing out against the rocker shaft. I have checked and rechecked the linkage and even made sure that the shaft is not turning inside the the weights. When the engine is stopped so that gravity will allow one weight to drop forward I can see that the sleeve and bearing do in fact move out and push the rocker shaft to the idle position. The linkage all the way to the butterfly on the carburetor is working OK. Somehow the weights appear to be violating the laws of physics and aren't moving the rocker shaft. Damn! if only gravity will do it, one would think centrifical force would do it better. The weight pins and bushings have a little bit of slop but are free and there doesn't seem to be any way they could be binding. I sure hope someone has seen this before and can point me in the right direction. In a related subject, can the governor shaft/gear/weight assembly come out without removing the radiator if it comes to that(UGH). And are there any comments on how to insure the gear goes back in the right notch so that I don't lose the timing? Any and all help is appreciated.

Bob,when i saw your e-mail I couldnt wait to read it.Just experenced the same thing last night,a friend came over and we fixed in about 30 minutes.your weights are stuck.you need to take the back off the govenor{closes to the radiator}you will se a ball between the 2 weights, this ball is supose to slide back and forth and allow the weights to move up and down.mine was stucked very tight,we sprayed blaster on the complete govenor and took a bar and light hammer and drove the ball back and forth ,by doing this several times we were able to move it very easily.we reinstalled the plate and it worked perfect

Thanks, My governor sure acts like the weights are stuck but they move easily by hand (or gravity for that matter) I have had that damn plate off about five times. I didn't see a "ball" in there, maybe that is the problem. I have a thimball looking thing with a bearing on the front end that the weights move back and forth on the main shaft in front if the weights, the bearing is the part that contacts the rocker shaft lever. Everything seems free and in the correct position. Could you please describe that "Ball" so I have a better idea of what to look for? Now that it has started to cool off I am going back out to fuss with the governor some more. Wish me luck.

Make sure the throttle rod is between the fork on the butterfly attachment to the carb. There is room for it to be before it or after it. I have even gotten them together with it not even touching it. Follow the rod around the block making sure it is fit tight (THE BOLT MUST BE IN THE THROTTLE SHAFT MANIFOLD SUPPORT PROPPORLY). I've screwed this process up more times than I care to expand on.

Thanks, I'll check that again, but I think I was pretty careful about that. I even took the little round cover off the back end of the butterfly shaft so I could watch the linkage work. I could even move the governor rocker arm by twisting the little brass dodad on the end of the carburetor throttle shaft. I like your idea though, because I hope it may be something simple that I am overlooking. Thanks again
