Silver rims - - painting discovery

Guys

During the restoration of my W-30, I learned that the rims were originally galvanized steel. Most folks grab the silver paint and paint them. My eye thinks the silver paint is too bright and silver is typically a pretty runny paint. When heading to Lowes for some silver paint for my project, I discovered a Rustoleum product called "hammered" finishes. This finish, when dry, has a crystal-like (not metallic) finish, looking more like galvanized metal than plane old silver paint. It also is a nice thick brush-able paint.

Word of caution - - don't brush on to hot sun baked metal, as it doesn't have enough time to flow and generate the hammer effect.

Am very pleased with the results. Cost is about $10/quart.

Good luck..... ...

The W-30 I have came from the factory with cast hubs and steel rims. All were rusty with remnants of silver paint. Haven't had the tires off to see what's going on inside the rim.

The point of the posting was the discovery of the "hammered" paint, not whether or not the rims were supposed to be silver/galvanized, or not.

What makes you think they were not red? Painting Committee decisions #39 on 2/22/1927 and #100 on 10/20/1936 indicate Red.

I'm not that familiar with tractors produced before the letter series. But, pictures I have of rubber tired tractors of that era show silver colored rims. IH did not make their own rims, they specified corrosion resistance to the outside manufacturer, which galvanized them. If that type rim was used prior to the letter series, IH would not have (or should not have) painted them red because galvanized metal of that time period required a special painting procedure -- not one paint for all as was IH's procedure. The 1936 decision you refer to was when IH went from gray to red, on the whole tractor. I take that decision as meaning everything on the tractor but the rims, wheels referring to the cast hub.

The 1936 decision says the wheels were to be Harvester Red. At that time the wheels were one piece. I am not certain if the W-30 ever had two-piece wheels. If they did, that might be a case for silver rims. Otherwise, I would paint the entire wheel red.

I agree on the one piece wheel being all red. I have a picture of, I think, a 39 W-30, with removable rims that are painted silver. I have never seen one in person, though.

A lot of people use silver or aluminum -- fine with me, but it's not "correct". Galvanized is not bright. I have heard of the hammered finish you like. I use a PPG GM rally wheel code (8568), and spray it on. I have also read that another rally wheel code, 3822, looks good, have not used it. I much prefer spraying over brushing, I simply have no brushing skills. Has a slight gray tint to it. It is metallic, but does not appear that way unless you look really close. It's virtually impossible to duplicate the original galvanized color unless you actually galvanize them by the same method IH's supplier used. Most people, including myself, have forgotten what galvanized rims look like, anyway.

Pete, I think that's called Hammer Tone, it was used on gauge panels in our vehicles that had a nice shiny finish. It was very durable too. Hal
