OK first off, I currently own a 40 Farmall M and i was wondering if the rear end lube, and the hydraulic fluid were the same or separate...(belly pump) and if there separate, how many gallons of oil do i need to fill the rear and will 90W work?

2nd question, i know that some M"s had a live hyrdaulic pump that was in front of the distributor...well there is what appears to be a pump of some sort with 2 pipe plugs in the top in front of my "add-on" distributor, but they are on the top, and all the ones i have seen are on teh bottom....i dont" know if that made much sence or not but i tried...

3rd question..I have a choice to buy a farmall B that has been in a barn most of it"s life and ran until parked 3 years ago (been in barn since then) it has decent rubber all the way around and is not stuck...he wants 500 for it, should i jump on it or not? I have heard that B"s are good tractors and are fairly "sought after" Thanks

The M should hold around 12 gallons of gear oil in the rear end. The 40 M never had a distributor or a live pump, so they had to have come from a donor. If the pump has no hoses then it would have to be burnt up from running dry , if it actually has been run. Usually the belly pump is used as a reservoir and the hoses should come from there and bypass to there. It is hard to tell what pump is on it. There are several that would fit. An IH 300, a Case pump, an M&W pump would work. The B is probably worth $500 as you have described it. I don't know about resale value.
Desireable is questionable. They have no hydraulics and you really can't use them for much other than pulling stuff.Collectors want them , but most don't want to pay much for them.
I see them regularly for $500 to $800.

The M uses 90wt in the tranny. Take the plug out of the pump and see if there is any oil in it as it should not be running dry. Seems strange that it is not connected to the resivour in the belley pump or not any hoses running from it. Better jump on the B as it would part out for much more than 500.
