I have an MV that runs just fine but starts strange. The engine cranks good but it doesn't start until you let up on the push button. It seems like all of the juice is going to the starter and none to the coil until you let up on the push button.

What's my problem????? ????? ????? ?

Thanks for any help

Big John – Has your MV been converted to 12 volts? Does it have a solenoid starter switch?

If it does, problem is likely the ballast resistor is not being bypassed by the solenoid when cranking. (In addition to the wire from the ignition switch to the coil “+” terminal, there should also be a wire running from the solenoid “I” terminal to the coil “+”)

If it’s 12 volt and has the original mechanical starter switch problem could be too high resistance in the ballast resistor (try shorting the resistor while cranking) or a failing coil.

Or if it’s still the stock 6 volt system, it’s likely you’ve got a weak coil.

----

Loren – The MV is a high ground clearance M – sort of an “M on stilts” .

Sounds like it is miss wired, you probably have a problem with no power going to the coil when the switch is in the start position. Look the wire over real good. So old tractor and car had a set up to by past the ballast resistor to get more power to the coil whne in the start position and you may have a bad wire on the side of the set up.

What's an MV, pardon me for asking? If it's gas with a distributor the first thing I'd check is to see if the ignition switch shows power on the run terminal while cranking. I've seen a couple switches power up the cranking terminal and leave the run terminal dry. Hope my ignorance helps. Loren.

Sorry for the second post. The first one didn't show up for several minutes so I assumed it didn't go thru and posted the second time.
