Distillate vs gas carb on an A. What went wrong?

I just rebuilt the engine and carb on my 46 A, which has the 48616DC distillate carburetor. Now that I have her running again I have to push the throttle halfway forward to get any gas to the pistons. Today I took the carb off and noticed that the idle discharge port is completely covered by the throttle plate when closed. I looked at the throttle body of a gas carb I happen to have in pieces and notice that idle discharge port is different. The gas carb has a vertical slot in the port and the distillate carb has a small hole on the left side of the port. I am baffled as to why my tractor ran at low idle in the normal throttle position before I rebuilt everything but now I have to move the throttle halfway forward. Obviously, it has to do with the opening in the idle port but I am certainly confused. My plan is to replace the distillate throttle body with the gas body I have on hand, just because I don't know what else to do.
