Dave: Mike has nailed most of the facts, gear drive diesel 656's were probably one of the best tractors ever built. A well maintained one is still a treasure to get your hands on.

If your talking gasser or hydro, run the other way fast as you can. Both will drive you to the poor house. To me a gasser or a hydro would be little more than a good parts tractor, as no one could have afforded to work tractor hard enough to wear the rest of it.

We bought a 656 with 3200 hours. Hydro went out right after we bought it. Engine gave problems a year later. We sold it and bought another 656 with 9000 hours. It runs like a champ and we havent had any problems. Hours dont really mean that much to me, its all in how the tractor was used. I assume you are looking at a gear drive diesel? They are nice tractors. The shifting linkage can get worn and cause some nasty shifting, but if I remember correctly you can fix that for about $500. Around here a nice one at auction would probably bring $5500-$6500. Dealers are in the $8000 area.
