Have been looking for some new/better tires for a 49 M and a fellow has some 12.4 by 38's will these fit? The old tires were 13.6 by 38.

While on the topic of tires/wheels... Will the wheels and hubs of a 460 or 560 fit an M?

12.4 was the old size 11 and was the standard on earlier M's the same as it was standard on all John Deere A tractors but like most of them as well as the Farmall M were changed to one size oversize by going to 12-13.6 for more traction. The rims should be the corect ones for the 11-12.4 tires. You will just loose a bit of speed and traction but you will gain drawbar pulling power

They will fit, 11-38/13.6-38's were more common. Ideally 12.4's fit a 10 inch rim, 13.6's fit an 11 inch rim.

I should have said 12-38/13.6-38 were more common. We had an H in the 40's-50's with 11-38's, good traction for tillage, an M in those days would have had 12-38's typically.

Yes, they will fit, but will look kinda funny on those 12 inch wide rims. Remember, the 12.4 of today is the same tire as the 11.2 of several years ago. 13.6 is what will fit the rims properly, or 14.9.

m's came with ten or eleven inch wide rims, not twelve.

Parts book says 10 inch rim for 11/12.4-38, 11 inch rim for 12/13.6-38, with an option of 13/14.9-38 on the 11 inch rim.

If you are responding to me, I gave the correct rim size. The ll.2 you refer to used to be called a 10. 11 became 12.4, 12 became 13.6, 13 became 14.9. The rim size is generally one inch less than the old tire size.
