Mowing with my 6-volt, positive ground IH 330 utility last evening and it died. No sputtering or indication of any problem. Just quit running. Battery would turn the engine over once, then dead. Carburetor had gas. Should the tractor continue running even if the battery is not being charged? If so, what would cause the tractor to simply die? Any help would be appreciated.

If immediately after it died the battery had enough power to turn the engine over even only once, chances are that the battery had enough power left to run the engine. Connections on the battery are another issue as a poor connection might act exactly as you describe. I’d suggest checking the battery cable connections and ends. If you see corrosion that you can’t get cleaned off, it would be best if you would replace it. You may also have a bad connection between the battery and the coil causing the engine to cut out.

Thanks for the suggestions. Worked on it last night. Charged the battery and the engine turns over fine. Fuel flow is fine. With the distributor cap off, pushed the ignition, there was one spark at the points and then no more sparks. Cleaned off the points, put things back together and it would fire once, then no more. Could it be the coil? All connections seem fine and all wires seem fine as I tested them with the meter. What to look for next?

If you are sure that you have dependable power to the coil, I would put in new points and a new condenser. If that doesn’t take care of the spark issue then I’d replace the coil next.

Thanks for the help. I replaced the condenser and points and it started right up!

With a low/dead battery you have no Zap-U-trons to power the coil. Other things that can cause it to just die like that is a rotor problem, points slipped, a wire comeing loose, and maybe a few other things.
